Minister Mary Butler, Government Chief Whip

My name is Mary Butler and I was born and reared in Portlaw, Co. Waterford where I still live with my husband Mick. We have 3 children.

I have been a lifelong member of Fianna Fáil. I first ran for office in 2014 and was successfully elected to represent the Comeragh Area in Waterford Council.

In 2016 I contested the general election and was elected on the first count, topping the poll. In 2020 I retained my seat. Fianna Fáil entered government and I was proud to be appointed Minister of State for Mental Health & Older People. I served in this role for five years.

I was recently re-elected in the 2024 general election, for the third time, to serve the people of Waterford. I am honoured to have been appointed Government Chief Whip and Minister of State attending cabinet for Mental Health.

I was honoured to have been elected Vice President of the Fianna Fáil Party in 2022, a position which I still hold.
